WHAT ARE TANKLESS WATER HEATERS?
Tankless water heaters do not have a reservoir of water like all of our tank style water heaters do. The water is heated instantaneously as it passes through a very small space. When not in use, they are cold. The instant someone turns on a tap, the tankless water heater turns on and immediately heats up the water.
ARE TANKLESS WATER HEATERS A NEW THING?
No. Takagi is a Japanese campany that has been making tankless water heaters for many years and doing a great job. Tankless water heaters have been common in Europe and South American countries for many years. As gas prices go up here in America people are turning to tankless water heaters like this one.
WHAT'S WRONG WITH TANK STYLE WATER HEATERS?
The tank style water heaters that we use are not very energy efficient for two reasons:
1. The method for transfering heat from the fire into the water is an ineficient design. It's basicly a straight pipe that goes through the center of a tank. A lot of heat escapes up through the flue.
2. After the water reaches it's target temperature the burner turns off. However, that same pipe used to heat the water now acts like an open chimney, drawing heat out of the water and up through the flue. After the water cools down the burner turns on and heats up the water again. This cyle of wasting gas repeats over and over every day and all night.
